“Hate is healthy,” says scientist Julianne Holt-Lunstad from the University of Utah in Salt-Lake-City. Well, if we can trust her research, it’s better than ambivalent emotions because they cause a higher rise in blood pressure. With us, you don’t have to hold back your hate. We don’t want you to become sick! So these are 10 things developers hate. Enjoy!

1) Programming

Some things you need to love to hate them. This type of hate we’re talking about is especially familiar to developers. Programming is like having a partner, that spices up your life. But she/he can also make it hell on earth, and you don’t understand what you did wrong. You think you’re a perfect partner, but then, out of nothing, she/he deletes all the Facebook photos with you on it and blocks you on Instagram. And on the contrary, she/he bakes you your favorite cake (Black Forest cake of course) after you forgot the birthday of her/his mother. Confused? We are too. What we are trying to say is: Sometimes the code doesn’t make any sense. Everything seems to be correct - Error. You don’t know what the hell you’re doing - Success! “Irony in the life of a Dev” - out now.

2) Interruptions

Emails, calls, meetings, a drone with a secret message floating past your office window: Man, there are so many beautiful ways to get interrupted. Especially in the century of Digital Revolution. Sure, Slack can help, but can also bring its problems with it. Maybe you just want to be a good co-worker and feel pressured to respond right away, or you just can’t weigh in with your opinion. But one thing is for sure: Once someone interrupts you in your “flow state,” it is harsh and very, very annoying to get back in.

3) Marketing

Annoyingly for the developer, there are situations in which marketing is promising the client “heaven on earth.” For example, to win him over or because they just don’t know, that a product can’t have extensive features. Sorry to all marketing specialists out there. We know there are real diamonds amongst you too, but most of you have never built a product!

4) Revisit your old code

“Who was the idiot that wrote this horrible code?! - Oh yes, that was me.” To revisit your code after some time is almost as terrifying, as having to work with the one of another idiot. The solution:

5) Semicolons

You’ve just written 1000 lines of code, you press the magic button and lo and behold - 1000 errors. That can only be the fault of a missing semicolon. A semicolon seems so trivial to humanity but doesn’t let you sleep for days.

6) Changes of thought

“I like it, but I have a few more ideas, that we should realize.” No, just no. “It’s great you’ve gotten some inspiration on your yoga-retreat, but that means, I can redesign the whole project,” you might think to yourself. The client is king, and luckily we’re not in the age of “Waterfall” anymore. But to be completely honest: having to make new add-ons with short notice really is no fun.

7) Stereotype: Computer-Doctor

Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle, Aunt and the old Lady in the next village your dog ran to in elementary school. Everyone asks you for help as soon as there are problems with their computers. We feel your pain. Maybe this shirt can help.

8) Stack overflow error

Okay, nothing much to say here. Just take a week off. You’re excused!

9) Internet Explorer

To be fair, the only thing Internet Explorer is good for is to install Google Chrome or Firefox. It is the tram amongst the Web Browser. You’ll agree with us when we say: “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”

10) Recruiter

Recruiting can be a win-win-win for all parties. The company gets a new employee, you get a sick job, and the recruiter gets a few coins and the satisfaction of having helped someone with their professional growth. That is, should hy recruit you. We know though, most recruiters don’t give a damn about you. They don’t care what your skills are and what you want. It’s like mass processing. But hey, should you ever come across a great recruiter (like our Ela) support them. Even if you’re not looking for a job atm. Recommend him to a friend or keep him/her in mind for when you are seeking, or tell him/her to reach out to you once a job becomes available that you might want to hear about. “You never know what you were missing till you try,” like the good old Emile Ford once sang.

She can’t park, he never shows his emotions. She is technically ungifted; he never cleans up after himself. You probably have a million other stereotypes popping up in your head right now, that you are confronted with daily. Sometimes you’re the one putting someone in a, or you are getting pigeonholed yourself. Yes, society did make a massive step in the right direction trying to eliminate the gender gap. But especially in the working world prejudice against women is still very much present and complicates the way to the top. Woman are still hugely underrepresented in the STEM field. And we at hy think - no reasons why!

1. Brina Lee @leebrina

She worked as a software engineer for the big guys! First Google, then Facebook and now the man dominated android team of Instagram is happy to have her on board. Problem-solving through coding let her heart jump a beat. With this passion, she managed to, amongst others, develop the direct messages tool for Instagram. Thanks Brina, thanks to you my mom can now send me funny cat videos not only on WhatsApp but Instagram too!

2. Megan Smith @smithmegan

2014 she was put in charge by no other than Barack Obama as the first female Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the United States. She was delighted with the task to unleash the potential of Tech, Data, and Innovation and therefore to help achieve political goals and needs of the citizens.

3. Reshma Saujani @reshmasaujani

When Reshma, who studied law, ran for U.S. Congress, she visited multiple schools and found a vast disparity of gender in computer science. Thereupon she found “Girls who code” to excite more women and give them a platform to exchange thoughts and come together.

4. Joanna Stern @joannastern

Mobile phones, tablets, PC's - you name it. Joanna knows all about the newest developments on the market. She works as Tech-Journalist for the “Wall Street Journal” and helps us to make hard decisions with her articles and videos weekly… Apple, or Samsung?

5. Jane McGonigle @avantgame

Computer games are fun for guys. But for girls too - also the older ones! Jane McGonigle is a professional computer game developer. Watch her TED Talk hear why she thinks computer games can change the world.

6. Jen Simmons @jensimmons

As so-called “Technology Evangelist” Jen engages in panels, conferences, or user meetings and tries to bring Tech closer to others. She is the host of the well-known podcast “The Web Ahead” and helped with projects for CERN, W3C, Google, and Drupal. Any questions?!

7. The ENIAC Women

There's sadly no twitter handle that comes with these beautiful women as they are unfortunately not with us anymore. But we think they can’t be not on this list. These women programmed the first computer in WW2 and thereby set an enormous milestone for the information era.

8. Verena Pausier @verenaDE

As founder of Fox and Sheep GmbH she and her international team of illustrators, animators, developers, and game designers create apps for kids in preschool age. With the help of these apps, she wants to enable parents to bring their children close to the digital world cautiously. The Berlin raised power woman was nominated as “Young Global Leader” by the World Economic Forum and, no doubt should be part of our list of remarkable women in Tech.

9. Sofie Quidenus @SofieQuiedenus

You might’ve lived with your parents and dragged yourself to uni every day with the age of 21. But Sofie established “Quidenus Technologies” and started building her first robots at that age. Now she manages a startup in AI that makes extraction of information in documents easy and super fast. We all can take a leaf out of her book, that’s for sure!

10. Dr. Diva Tommei @dtommei

We all know it. We have to sit inside and work while everyone is having fun in the sun. Dr. Tommei also experienced this unpleasant feeling when she was studying for her doctorate in biotechnology at Cambridge. These were 10 stories of incredible women that don’t give a sh*it about what they’re meant to be good at and what not. They JUST DO and are highly motivated and successful in their work. Man or woman, passion is gender-neutral. So, what are you waiting for, lure your pigeon out of the hole, it’s been in there for way too long!

In November 2016 we were all shocked when Google announced release plans for Angular 3, just 6 months after Angular 2. Then it turned out Angular 3 was nothing to happen. Instead, Igor Minar  announced a release plan for the fourth version of the famous JavaScript framework on December 9th 2016 at the NG-BE Conference in Belgium. 

After eight Beta Releases from december till february angular 4 is finally out and we tell you what you can expect!

What’s new? 

Angular 4 is toward compatible with 2.x.x. and supports TypeScript 2.1 and 2.2 with the goal to make it faster and slimmer. If the Team is to believed, the follow-up will even go the extra mile. 

Angular Universal

Universal, the project, that allows developers to run Angular on the server, is now up-to-date again. Furthermore the improved *ngIf and *ngFor can now also be used in Template-Binding. 

Animation Package

Animations are now an own package and not part of @angular/core anymore. That means for those, who don't use animations, the code won’t be provided. 

View Engine

View Engine was improved in Angular 4 and can reduce the size of generated code up to 60%. This represents a significant improvement for mobile applications. 

There’s a catch - StrictNullChecks 

With the latest release the team decided to make TypeScripts strictNullChecks-Setting incompatible with the current version. In the RC-Phase it became clear, that the integration of this function needs more work and the support won’t be possible till version 4.1. Thus problems with existing applications can be avoided.

Prospects - Angular 5

The team has a strict time frame. Each week one Patch/Bugfix release. Each month a minor release and each 6 months a major release. So if we’re lucky, we can calculate on Angular 5 in October this year. In Angular 5 we can expect a model for ServiceWorker, whereat notifications can be imaged. 

We are eager to find out what other optimisations are waiting for us!

Codecademy: 

The probably most know platform Codecademy combines two important aspects in its panel: The text editor and the implementation on the website. As student, you can see what happens to the code right away. Nothing against the good old Youtube videos, but Codecademy definitely steps up the game.

2. Apps

SoloLearn: You really underestimate how much time you waste whilst on the train/bus or waiting for someone. You’re not doing anything so why not be productive and learn to code with apps like SoloLearn?

Udacity: An online university, that offers so-called “nanodegrees”. Course graduates receive an accredited certificate and support whilst job-hunting in the digital world.

Youtube: Next to all these fee-based platforms, that impart learning material using video, there’s still Youtube! Surprise! Who knew? The channel “DrapsTV” was especially good, cause it has playlists with tutorials to topics like Python, Octave and HTML5.

Now you have the perfect base to finally start! But sadly I can’t help you with learning itself. Who really wants to learn how to code, needs to get used to comb through forums, books and codes.
